Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening is generally safe for adults with healthy teeth and gums when it is done by a dental professional, or with a product used exactly as directed. Whitening is designed to lighten the colour of teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. The most common side effects are temporary sensitivity to cold and gum irritation, and healthdirect Australia advises seeing your dental professional if they last more than 1 or 2 days.

The risks come mainly from three things: strong products used without a dental professional, overuse, and whitening teeth or gums that need a dentist first. This guide covers what Australian guidance says, what whitening does to your enamel, and how to whiten safely at home.

What does Australian guidance say about teeth whitening?

Both healthdirect and the Australian Dental Association say the safest, most effective whitening is given or supervised by a dental professional, who can check whether your teeth are suitable first.

At-home kits are sold online, in pharmacies and at the supermarket. If you whiten at home, choose a product that lists every ingredient, follow the instructions exactly, and have a dental check-up first if you have any doubts about your teeth or gums.

Does teeth whitening damage enamel?

Used as directed, it should not. The UK's Oral Health Foundation explains that whitening is designed to lighten the colour of teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. SmilePro's gel, with 6% hydrogen peroxide and potassium nitrate, is enamel safe and developed by dental professionals. Overuse carries more risk, so never exceed the stated treatment time or number of treatments.

If your enamel is already thin or worn, whitening is unlikely to give a good result, and a dentist should look first.

Why do teeth look patchy straight after whitening?

Right after a session, your teeth may look slightly uneven in colour. This is normal and caused by temporary dehydration of the enamel; your teeth rehydrate and even out within a few hours.

Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?

Some people feel temporary sensitivity, often to cold, straight after whitening. SmilePro's gel is Sensitivity-free: formulated to help prevent sensitivity in healthy teeth, with potassium nitrate in the formula, and the red LED is designed for a more comfortable treatment. If your teeth are already sensitive, see a dentist before whitening, as sensitivity can have a cause that needs treating first.

If you feel discomfort during a treatment, stop, rinse and pause your course. If it does not settle within 1 or 2 days, see your dental professional. Read more in Teeth whitening for sensitive teeth.

What else can harm your enamel?

Everyday habits matter more than most people think. Things to watch:

  • Brushing too hard, or with a hard toothbrush: healthdirect recommends a soft toothbrush, especially with whitening toothpaste.
  • DIY remedies such as lemon, baking soda or charcoal used often: healthdirect warns that using these often may damage your teeth.
  • Using whitening products more often, or for longer, than the instructions say.

Who should check with a dentist before whitening?

See a dentist first if any of these apply to you:

  • You have sensitive teeth or unhealthy gums.
  • You have gum disease, an oral infection or recent dental surgery.
  • You have cracks or holes in your teeth, or other untreated dental problems.
  • You have amalgam (silver) fillings.
  • You have crowns, veneers or fillings at the front: whitening will not change their colour.

How do you whiten your teeth safely at home?

Make sure your teeth and gums are healthy, follow the timings exactly, never use a product more often than directed, and stop if you feel pain. With the SmilePro Advanced Kit:

  • Avoid eating or drinking anything other than water in the 30 minutes before your session, and brush with water first.
  • Paint a thin, even layer of gel and avoid getting it on your gums. Do not swallow the gel.
  • Always use the gel with the light. Each treatment is 10 minutes and the light switches itself off; you can run up to three 10-minute cycles (30 minutes) in one session, without adding more gel.
  • Do one session a day for 7 days, then a 10-minute top-up every 2 weeks.
  • Do not use whitening products for more than 14 consecutive days without a dentist's supervision.
  • After each treatment, wait 1 hour before eating or drinking anything except water, and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing.

You can see each step on our How It Works page.

How does SmilePro approach safety?

SmilePro's gel was developed by dental professionals, is enamel safe and formulated to help prevent sensitivity in healthy teeth, and every ingredient is listed on the product page. The LED light switches itself off after 10 minutes. If your teeth are already sensitive, we recommend seeing a dentist first.
